Harry Potter Movie 3

4/7/2019

Great, but darker than first couple.

Great film, but I was too scared to watch it all until I was about 11 or 12. At the very beginning, Harry's great aunt gets blown up and all fat and it's a little disturbing to be honest. Scared the hell outta me when I was 7 haha, but I'm a scaredy cat like that. Quite a dark theme.... a LOT darker and more moving than the first couple; but you should still watch it. Freaky scene when Professor Reamus Lupin turns into werewolf, and can be scary / bad for younger kids when there's a killer on the loose and tries to murder hermione harry and ron.

Nightmares for the young audience

Although rated PD here, this is really not suitable for kids under 9/10, much too scary - it frightened my daughter aged 7 and we had to switch off, I had to spend a good deal of time calming her fears. She had loved the first two movies in the series which were not a challenge to her.

Scary for younger kids

As a reader of the Harry Potter books and as a parent, I really enjoyed the movie. However my 8 year old son was really scared by this movie. He is a little sensitive to scary material. I think he could have handled the same material in the book but in the movie it's much more real and graphic. He cited the 'possessed' voice of one of the characters and the werewolf transformation. Even though I used the 'violent' icon, I really mean it's scary more so than violent. I also think the first two movies were not as scary.

totally five stars but has some violence and scary parts

I love all the visual effects for the magic such as the invisibility cloak, the talking portraits and the ghosts and also Harry's ride on Buckbeak the hippogriff. some violent and scary parts are, when Harry meets the dementor on the train, when Mr. Lupin turns in to a werewolf and when Harry and Sirius Black fight the dementors at the pond.

Best Harry Potter movie - bit scary but manageable (5+)

My kids are 5 and 7 and liked the movie. My 7 year old girl loved it; my 5 year old was bored at times, since the story becomes deeper and darker. There are a few scary scenes with the dementors and the monster transformation, but my kids were not scared. We have always told them monsters are not real, it's all fiction, showed them how movies are made, etc.But I understand my kids may be a bit special in that sense. I would certainly recommend for 7+, and realize it may be scary for younger kids.

Very good! But more dark than No. 1 and No. 2

This film is very good! It is more dark than The Sorcerer's Stone (No. 1) and The Chamber of Secrets (No. 2) though. But I think younger tweens 10+ can handle it. It also has a bit more language than the first two as well: 3 uses of bloody h*ll, 2 of d*mn, 1 of bi*ch to use of a dog, and lastly-what is just an awful insult in the Harry Potter world- mud-blood 3 times (like I said, not a cuss word, just an awful insult in the H. P. World). And there is a bit of drinking in the film, but not much. So my MPAA rating is: PG-13 for creature and fantasy violence, some frightening images and language, mild frightening moments, rude humor, and for some drinking. Very good Harry Potter film that is dark and is fine for tweens 10+! Hope this helps!

Not as good as the books

The movie is not that good and everyone is overrating the movies for what they really are. The characters are bland in the movies but in the books we get more of them. The acting not that good especially Emma Watson she is one of the most overrated actors of all time she has no character, her acting has no charisma. The camera work is actually pretty good I like it always moving. But the story is good but if you want your kid to enjoy Harry Potter let him read the books than watch the movies.

The film series shifts up a gear

Chris Columbus did a good a good job with the first two films, but the decision to hire Alfonzo Cuarón to direct the third led to the film series shifting up a gear in quality. There is a more character-driven approach, made possible in part because the main actors are growing up, but also because it toom risks that paid off. The portrayal of the terrifying dementors, metaphors for depression, is particularly freat. What could have juat been mere magic has a more psychological meaning. Gary Oldman and David Thewlis are great additions to the cast for two great characters. The only flaw is that sone key exposition is missed out. As most of us were fans of the books first, this is less of a problem, but those who havent read the books may need one or two things explained.

The best yet!

Excellent film and the time turner fits in well. Sirius black is a very good character and it is more magical than ever. The knight bus is my favourite scene and the Quidditch is very good in general.

Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban Book review

The book Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban is a fantastic book. Its a great book because it shows great role models like Harry is brave enough to fight the evil and he is also brave, he is not afraid of anything. I would recommend this book to people because it shows great role models like Hermione, Ron , and harry stick help each other together and help each other and show great team work. The central theme is to never trust what people say because when they said the sirius black was going to kill harry potter well he didn't and he didn't kill 13 people with on spell it was another mysterious person. The central conflict was when sirus black is going to kill sirius black .

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a 2004 British fantasy film directed by Alfonso Cuarón and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling. The film, which is the third instalment in the Harry Potter film series, was written by Steve Kloves and produced by Chris Columbus (director of the first two instalments), David Heyman, and Mark Radcliffe. The story follows Harry Potter's third year at Hogwarts as he is informed that a prisoner named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban intending to kill him. Themes:Conquering fear is a hug theme here. Friendship, love, bravery, and loyalty are always major themes in the series. So is the idea of making good choices. Diverse cast and strong female characters.Violence: Harry's school book attacks him (the book is equipped with eyes and teeth and attacks very abruptly so it may cause a jump). Draco gets kicked by a Hippogriff (a sort of mix between a falcon and a horse). His father makes a complaint and arranges to have the Hippogriff executed. We see the execution from on top of a hill and the actual killing is not visible. All we see is the executioner raise and then lower his axe from far away and we see birds fly when the axe lowers. However as shown later, the Hippogriff was rescued and all the executioner was really lowering his axe on was a pumpkin. Hermione punches Draco in the face. A black dog attacks Ron and drags him by the leg. Harry disarms Snape, and in the process sends him flying across the room and crashing into a bed. Lupin's transformation into a werewolf is particularly frightening. You see his backbone protrude and reshape as well as his feet and his face. He then goes on to attack Harry, Ron & Hermione but is intercepted by Sirius (as a dog). They erupt into a fight and Lupin nearly kills Sirius. Recommended MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some creature violence and frightening images.Language:3 uses of bloody hell, 2 uses of bloody, 1 use of damn and 1 mild use of bitch.Drug Use:In the oppening sequence, Marge, Vernon and Petunia drink some brandy. Marge also lets her pet bulldog drink brandy out of her glass. Fudge and Rosmerta drink some alcoholic drinks from a bottle.Sex:Nudity:Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban is considered as 'The best!' All viewers aged 10 and up will be admitted to see the film.

I'm 8 years old and Prisoner of Azkaban is violent. The movie has black ghosts called Dementors that suck your soul and a powerful spell 'Expecto Patronum.' This can be scary.

very amazing

I am almost 7 years old. The violence did not shock me.The werewolf transformation is so cool. I like all three movies. It is not appropriate for ages under 5. I think it is good because there are more rescuing than murdering. I have the feeling of magic happening in the real world while watching the movie. The knight bus passed between two cars is amazing. I want to see the rest if HP defeats Voldemort but my father said wait until next year. I just want to read HP books for now.

Story

Sirius Black, the notorious murderer, has somehow evaded the Dementors (vicious, spirit-type creatures) and escaped from the impenetrable Azkaban Prison. Mr Weasley, from the Ministry of Magic, warns Harry that he is in serious danger as Sirius is headed for Hogwarts to find him. It’s believed that it was Sirius Black (Harry’s Godfather) who betrayed Harry’s parents to Voldemort. This led to their death.

While the students are on their way to Hogwarts on the train, it suddenly comes to a stop and all the lights go out. The window panes freeze over and a Dementor enters Harry’s carriage and tries to drag him away, causing him to faint. The Dementor might have succeeded but for Professor Lupin, teacher of Defence of the Dark Arts, who overcomes the creature with his wand. At Hogwarts, Dumbledore explains that Dementors are guarding the grounds to prevent Sirius Black from entering. He warns the students to keep well away.

Dumbledore and the teachers try to keep the school operating normally and Lupin starts to teach the young wizards and witches about boggarts. Boggarts are figments of the imagination that appear to students in the form of their most feared object. To combat them, students learn to yell out ‘ridiculous’ and the boggart changes into something funny. The Divination teacher Professor Trelawney fears for Harry and predicts disastrous events for him. Hagrid, the giant groundskeeper, tries to teach the students how to befriend a hippogriff called Buckbeak. Harry succeeds but when Malfoy (a particularly nasty student whose father has some influence in running the school) tries, Buckbeak rears up and kicks him in the shoulder. Malfoy immediately seeks the dismissal of Hagrid but has to be satisfied with the execution of Buckbeak.

Harry and his two friends, Ron and Hermione, try to console Hagrid but are very upset themselves. On their way back from Hagrid’s house, a wolf runs at them. It grabs Ron by the ankle and dragging him into a hole beneath the Whomping Willow tree. Harry and Hermione try to enter the hole but the tree does its best to keep them out, beating them back with its branches and sending Hermione flying. They eventually enter and find Ron with a broken leg, unable to move. He tries to warn them that it’s a trap, but he is too late. Sirius is there waiting for them. Harry runs at Sirius and nearly chokes him but is prevented by the arrival of Lupin.

Sirius explains to Harry that it was in fact Peter Pettigrew who betrayed Harry’s parents, not Sirius. Some had thought that Peter Pettigrew had also been killed with Harry’s parents but he has actually been living as Ron’s pet rat Scabbers for the past 12 years. Sirius makes Scabbers turn back into Peter and confess his crimes.

At midnight, things start to turn nasty when Lupin turns into a werewolf, Peter turns back into a rat and runs away, and Sirius turns into a wolf. Sirius and Lupin fight ferociously and when Sirius becomes human again he has an injured shoulder and is unable to fight off the Dementors who are waiting for him. Harry, however, who has been taking private lessons from Lupin on how to defend himself against the Dementors, manages to overpower them, thinking that it is in fact his father casting the spell. Harry is overcome by his efforts and Sirius appears dead. They are both taken back to Hogwarts, where Sirius is locked in the tower awaiting return to Azkaban.

Dumbledore saves the situation with a plan in which he engages Hermione’s help, hoping to save the life of more than one innocent victim.

Themes

Fantasy, horror and supernatural themes

Violence

  • Buckbeak rears up at Malfoy and kicks him in the shoulder.
  • During the Quidditch match, one of the players is struck by lightening and falls to the ground. During the match, a Dementor breathes menacingly on Harry who also falls to the ground.
  • Using the anonymity of his invisibility cloak Harry beats up Malfoy and his two mates for harassing Hermione and Ron.
  • Hermione threatens Malfoy with her wand then punches him. Ron and Harry perceive this act as heroic.
  • The wolf rushes at Harry, Ron and Hermione, dragging Ron into a hole in the Whomping Willow tree.
  • The Whomping Willow tree attacks Harry and Hermione, beating them violently with its branches, lifting Hermione up and swinging her round, sending her flying.
  • Harry attacks Sirius and nearly chokes him.
  • Harry attacks Snape and knocks him out.
  • Buckbeak kicks the werewolf and sends him flying.

Content that may disturb children

Under 8

  • Dementors appear as faceless, hooded and cloaked creatures that fly and float around and have really long, bony, pointed fingers. Two scenes in which Dementors try to suck the life force out of Harry’s and Sirius’s bodies could be particularly disturbing.
  • When Harry leaves home, he sits on the street with his suitcase when strange things start to happen. The street light goes out, the playground equipment starts moving on its own, and Harry sees a wolf with green eyes glaring at him. The wolf appears vicious and starts growling at Harry.
  • Harry gets picked up by a magic bus that has a talking and laughing skull hanging in the window.
  • The bus drives madly through the town while the bus conductor explains to Harry about Sirius Black the ‘murderer’.
  • The bus drops Harry off at the Leaky Cauldron, which is in a very scary ‘Dickensian’ part of town. Harry is met there by a hunchback.
  • Harry tries to open the Monster Book of Monsters which has moving yellow eyes and hairy claws holding it shut. When he gets it open, the book chases Harry around the room.
  • The Hogwarts train stops suddenly and all the lights go out. The window panes freeze over and Ron sees something moving ‘out there’. A Dementor enters the carriage and tries to drag Harry out of his body. Lupin casts a spell on the Dementor turning it away.
  • Dumbledore warns the students to keep away from the Dementors who are ‘very vicious creatures’.
  • Ghosts walk through the halls at Hogwarts.
  • Professor Trelawney scares Harry by telling him he has ‘the grim’.
  • The Monster Book of Monsters attacks Neville.
  • The Hippogriff is a large bird-like creature with four legs, a large beak, eyes and the wings of an eagle.
  • Ghosts on horses break windows in the dining hall and ride through the hall.
  • Neville’s boggart is Professor Snape, who transforms into his grandmother.
  • Professor Snape is a very dark, intimidating character.
Ron’s boggart is a giant tarantula, which runs towards him.
Another boggart is a giant cobra.
  • Harry’s boggart is a Dementor, which Harry is unable to change. Lupin comes to his rescue and transforms it into a balloon.
  • The moving and talking paintings on the walls at Hogwarts have been slashed and the ‘Fat Lady’ is missing from her portrait. All this implies that Sirius Black is inside the castle.
  • Snape tells the students about werewolves who have no choice about their transformation during a full moon.
  • During the Quidditch match, a very bad storm brews and Harry sees a wolf in the sky. The Dementors chase Harry flying on his broom. One opens its mouth revealing it to be full of blood, then it breathes on Harry who falls to the ground.
  • Lupin tells Harry that Dementors are ‘the foulest creatures’ who feed on a person’s every happy memory.
  • Talking skulls hang in the pub in Hogsmeade.
  • Lupin teaches Harry the Patronus charm to ward off the Dementors. Lupin lets out a Dementor (actually a boggart) out of the trunk to help Harry practise, but Harry is overcome and faints. In his second attempt, Harry defeats the Dementor.
  • Harry sees Sirius Black in a crystal ball when he is suddenly grabbed by Professor Trelawney who’s possessed by a man and starts speaking in a man’s voice. This scene is very scary.
  • The executioner appointed to kill Buckbeat is dressed in black and is shown polishing a huge, curved executioner’s blade. Later he is shown swinging the blade.
  • Dead ferrets hang in Hagrid’s yard, as feed for Buckbeak.
  • Scabbers the rat transforms into a grovelling, filthy Peter Pettigrew.
  • When Lupin changes into a werewolf, he bursts out of his clothes, growling and snarling, and appears to be in a lot of pain.
  • The werewolf howls at the moon, then growls at Harry, Hermione and Ron, turning on them. Sirius turns into a wolf and fights Lupin off. The werewolf is huge and scary looking. Sirius lies injured on the ground with blood on his shoulder.
  • The Dementors arrive to take Sirius away and try to drag him out of his body.
  • Harry casts the Patronus charm and manages to overcome the Dementors.
  • Sirius breathes ice and appears to have died.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a highly suspenseful, complex tale, based on the hugely successful book, with a plot that twists and turns along the way. The acting is very well done, as are the special effects. There is some humour in the movie, which lightens what is otherwise a very dark tale.

The theme of this movie is that good triumphs over evil, although Harry and Hermione do use violence to achieve their aims. Also the movie shows that sometimes people are erroneously convicted and should be given a second chance. You might like to talk about some of the values in this movie, such as friendship and courage. Another topic for discussion could be your own attitude to using violence as a way to solve conflict and the moral issue of hating one’s enemies.
